EARTHQUAKE
ONE YEAR ON: JUMMA'S STORY
Sixty-year-old Jumma has lived in Nambla
village in the Uri district of Kashmir all his life. Twelve months after the
October 8 earthquake, he, his wife and three children are still
living in tent provided by ActionAid as a temporary shelter. They have yet to
receive any government compensation to rebuild their home.
His wife, one of his daughters and his son are
disabled and look after the home. His second daughter who is able-bodied attends
school and is in the fifth class.
As a second winter approaches with no
compensation payments on the horizon, the family has sought ActionAid’s
support in constructing a more permanent home.
“I sent several applications to the local
administrator. Our village head even took the case to the MLA (member of
legislative assembly)," he says
"We were told that the time for first
instalments of compensation had passed and that second instalments will be given
to those who were on the list for the first payment.
"I don’t know why we are not on the
list. People in the village do help us out with food but we have to cook outside
and the weather is getting colder now day by day.
"Sometimes
I join the cash-for-work team. This helps to cover daily expenses but building a
road is hard work and I do not always have the energy.”
