Peace initiative for Gujarat riot survivors
Aman Samudaya, a campaign for peace and justice was started in the aftermath of communal violence in Gujarat . Aman Samuday has been addressing the issues in the different fronts like legal support to victims of violence, campaign against human rights violation, rehabilitating the most vulnerable among the survivors and providing the psycho social support to traumatized women, children and men who suffered the most in the violence. Looking at the urgency and demand in the rural areas, The campaign for peace and justice, which was started in Ahmedabad, has now planned to take up villages in rural Gujarat : Sabarkantha, Mehsana, Panchmahal, Dahod and Baroda.
The Aman Sumaday program has addressed immediate needs of affected people from poor families. In short term, food support was extended to 2381 families and 1,858 families received livelihood support. Rainproof shelters were provided to about 20,000 people. About 3000 families were extended unmet relief needs. Aman Samudaya has expanded to 44 villages supporting initiatives for peace building and communal harmony.
Following are some of the other achievements of Aman Samudaya:
- Aman Samudaya has attained visibility and acceptance with the community as a unique effort to reduce widening communal rift
- People are beginning to identify Aman Samudaya as a resource center.
- Aman Samudaya team could reach out to the most needy families which has been acknowledged and appreciated by the local leaders and vulnerable groups
- For the first time the vulnerable groups have something to rely upon during emergency situation in the form of Aman Kosh.
