TOWARDS DALIT EMPOWERWMENT..
The beginning..
Network of Voluntary Organizations of Kurnool (NOVOK) is a collective of 13 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community based organizations (CBOs) working in Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh (AP). It was founded in 1995 with the support of district administration with an objective and purpose to strengthen the district government efforts in the development process and poverty eradication. Mr. Katta Swamidas, a committed social activist, has been providing a leadership to the network in the capacity of Andhra Pradesh Dalit Samakhya (APDS), Founder President. NOVOK has facilitated the evolution of APDS.
NOVOK partnership with ActionAid started in 1999 to facilitate and strengthen 50,000 women self-help groups (SHGs) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The support was initially for a period of three years and thereafter, after series of meetings and dialogue between NOVOK and ActionAid, it was mutually agreed to take up rights based approach for addressing violations/issues of the dalit community.
