Stirring portrait of Struggle for dignity
"I don't remember my mother. She died when I was three. But my childhood was good. I went to school and played 'Gilli-Danda' and had lots of fun", says Roshanben Shaikh, who hails from Deesha in Gujarat . "I finished high school and at 18 I was full of dreams." Soon she got married, went on to have two daughters & was happy. till her husband was mercilessly snatched away by TB. A few years later she re-married but misery & unhappy matrimony led her nowhere. The responsibility of grooming Muni & Rukshana - her children, took over all other priorities. Going it alone was a choice she had to make & took to stitching as a business. Working her sweat through day & night she groomed two bubbling children & her horizon looked bright. Then came the floods, which swept a working class settlement. It submerged everything - the market yard, her homes & her hopes. Over 2000 families were on the streets. It was during their rehabilitation that her leadership qualities and creative talent stood out. She mobilized a whole community when the government gave alternate site for resettlement.
