Regional Initiatives:
The Sahariya Initiative
Sahariyas are one the primitive tribal groups found in a contiguous belt stretching the three Indian states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Praedsh. All development indicators present a very grim situation of this primitive tribal community. Sahariyas have depended on forest produce for centuries for their sustenance but the depletion of forest cover coupled with their increasing non-access to forest produce has compounded their problems. Landlessness and continuous drought (the project is facing drought for last three consecutive years) has further robbed them of the possibility of earning their livelihood as agricultural labourers. Presently they are living in acute state of impoverishment and hunger. A few cases of starvation deaths were also reported from this community during this period. As a response, a long term sponsorship project was initiated by our Madhya Pradesh regional office and network partners (Sampark, Parhit, CID and BGVS) with this community in Baran and Shivpuri district of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
