Regional Initiatives:
Samuhik Marudi Pratikar Udyam: A collective initiative for food
SPMU is a network initiative in Bolangir to address the issue of drought, chronic hunger and food security. It has also taken up other citizenship rights of the excluded communities like Education, Health, and women's rights and right to dignity.
ActionAid initiated its development intervention in Bolangir in 1997 taking six local organisations and working in 56 worst affected villages. ActionAid perceived that drought in Bolangir having multifarious effect, needs long-term intervention and involvement of all sections and group of people. It needs collective action and collaboration of different groups, individuals and stakeholders. And thus, Collective Action for Drought Mitigation in Bolangir (CADMB) emerged as a network of NGOs/CBOs working in different parts of the district. Later, the network was given a more Kosali ( Western Orissa dialect) identity by renaming it Samuhik Marudi Pratikar Udyam (SMPU) . From the initial strength of 10 partners spread across 110 villages in the network in 1998, it has increased to 19 organisations spread a cross 390 villages in the network by 2000. In 2005, there are 16-partner organisation in the CADMB network Bolangir and 8 partner organisations at Padmapur Sub division of Baragarh district.
