Food Rights and livelihood
India is home to the largest number of people with malnourishment. Every year we read reports of starvation deaths and people living with chronic hunger. Women and children are the worst affected. The irony is that nearly 40 million tonnes of foodgrains lie in state owned storage. In our country the problem of food security is therefore primarily a question of distributive justice.

Education
The Indian Constitution guarantees education as a fundamental right of all citizens. However, millions of children continue to remain out of school. The state and civil society has to work together to ensure free access to quality education within an equitable system.

Peace and human security
The Indian Constitution upholds secular values and guarantees the right to life and liberty to all its citizens. During communal and ethnic conflicts it is the poorest people, women and children who are the worst affected. The civil society must support women and youths from marginalised communities to strengthen peace and harmony in our society.

Homelessness and right to shelter
Thousands of poor people in urban areas live with homelessness under great risks. Women and girls are the worst affected and highly vulnerable to violence and abuse. The right to shelter must be recognised as a fundamental right of all citizens – it is essential to lead a life with dignity.

Women's Rights
One of the keys to eradicating poverty is to ensure rights of women and girls. This is possible only when the state and civil society resolve to fight patriarchy and work to reform social institutions that reinforce inequality between women and men.

HIV and AIDS
India is home to more than 5 million people with HIV and AIDS. The epidemic is linked closely with poverty and gender inequity. only 57% of Indian women have heard of AIDS. The state and civil society must work together to protect the human rights of people living with HIV and AIDS and to prevent the further spread of the virus.
