Urgent Appeal for Assam Flood Relief

Assam is currently facing a severe flood crisis. As of July 8, 2024, nearly 23 lakh people across 28 districts have been affected. The floods have caused significant damage to homes, crops, and infrastructure. The death toll has reached 78, with 66 deaths due to the flooding alone. Immediate support is needed to help those affected.

Current Situation

Nearly 23 lakh people in Assam are affected by the floods, with 3,446 villages submerged and 68,432.75 hectares of crops inundated. The worst-hit districts are Dhubri, with 7,54,791 people affected, Cachar with 1,77,928 affected people, and Barpeta with 1,34,328 affected people. Relief efforts have set up 269 camps sheltering 53,689 people, while 3,15,520 individuals are receiving aid outside the camps.

The Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger mark at Nimatighat, Tezpur, and Dhubri. Other rivers, including Burhi Dihing at Khowang, Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat, Dhansiri at Numaligarh, Kopili at Dharamtul, Beki at Barpeta, Sankosh at Golakganj, Barak at BP Ghat, and Kushiyara at Karimganj, have also breached danger levels. Additional districts severely affected by the floods include Hojai, Karimganj, Morigaon, Nagaon, Dima Hasao, Dibrugarh, Hailakandi, Golaghat, and Karbi Anglong West, with 577 villages submerged and 6,023.18 hectares of crop area damaged.
