Our Own Water Crisis

Today, India is facing its worst-ever water crisis, with some 600 million people facing acute water shortage. 21 cities are likely to run out of groundwater by 2020, a government think-tank says. The report further highlights that, 75% of households do not have drinking water on premise, 84% of rural households do not have access to piped water, 70% of water is contaminated.

Moreover, rivers and streams have borne the brunt of the recent urban explosion in India, a nation whose population has nearly doubled in the last 40 years to 1.35 billion. Unplanned growth has led to the use of water bodies as dumping grounds for sewage and industrial effluent. It is time to address these issues and come up with viable solutions, to ensure that future generations can have access to clean water.

The CHALLENGE

This is a challenge that combines innovation and action.

It is about identifying a water-related problem from within the specified categories and then finding a targeted solution to the problem in the form of a product or process innovation that you have created. Enlisting creative minds to conceive and build working models of products and innovative processes in the specified categories will tremendously contribute in bringing forward both product and process-based solutions that will go a long way in making human habitation sustainable.

A challenge within the challenge is to put special efforts in creating products or processes that can be relied upon, produced and maintained at lower costs, so that it can be accessible to even those with the least purchasing power.

PRODUCT CLASSIFICATION

Your product, should be classified either as

  • DO IT YOURSELF (DIY)
If your idea is to create a process innovation or to invent a product that is simple enough for people to understand and build under guidance, please classify it as DIY while registering.

  • TO BE MANUFACTURED / READY-MADE
If you believe your product involves complicated technologies and therefore need standardised factory production, please check this option while registering.
DEFINITIONS
DEFINITIONS

PRODUCT INVENTION:
We are inviting people with any new product ideas, which leads to the creation and introduction of a device for the first time, to solve any problem within the given categories.

PROCESS INNOVATION:
Some of the problems within the given categories can be solved by innovating an already existing process which addresses the problem, at maybe a lower cost, complexity or risks and higher benefits. Eg. there are existing ways to recharge ground water, but innovations in these technical processes can make them more efficient. Such innovations would be called process innovations.

WORKING MODEL:
A working model is a functional but miniature version of the actual product that you want to build.

WORKING PROTOTYPE:
A working prototype is a functional life size version of the product that you want to build.
