Her Safety Matters
Every Woman Should Feel Safe at Work
One mission: to turn silence into collective courage.
In an ongoing initiative ActionAid Association is empowering informal women workers across India—gig workers, home-based entrepreneurs, street vendors, construction workers, and agricultural workers. Young Indian women are entering a changing workforce with unprecedented opportunities for independence and progress. But they're also facing unsafe working conditions, lower wages, limited support, and uncertainty about where to seek help when grievances arise or harassment occurs.
Over 95% of India’s women workers are in the informal sector, often facing low and unequal wages, insecure work, sexual harassment, and inadequate facilities such as safe, separate toilets. Many also lack information and access to legal protection and grievance redressal mechanisms.
What your support for "Her Safety Matters” means
Her Safety Matters, an initiative of ActionAid Association, works directly with women workers, communities, employers, and government institutions to create safer workplaces. We:
- Distribute easy-to-read booklets in multiple languages to informal women workers, covering the POSH Act, fair wages and timely payments, safety during night shifts and at workplaces, working with contractors and management, social security, maternity and motherhood entitlements, and safe borrowing from finance companies.
- Train community leaders to champion women's safety and defend rights in their localities
- Provide access to legal protection to women facing harassment
- Organize interface meetings with advocates and government officials to strengthen implementation of provisions
- Build livelihood skills and entrepreneurship opportunities for sustainable income
- Empower women and girls to resist discrimination and unequal power structures
Through women worker schools, awareness rallies, public meetings, and solidarity events, we bring together women workers, employers, government officials, youth groups, labour representatives, and civil society organizations to collectively promote dignity, respect, and equality at work.
