Donate to Assam Flood Relief Response

Assam is reeling from severe floods that have resulted from almost continuous monsoon rainsfrom May 2020. There have been around 47 deaths related to the nearly incessant rainfall and landslides it has caused–since 22 May and as on the 29th of June, 2020. The districts of Upper Assam are in a precarious condition but overall 2,404 villages in 25 districts have been affected and as on 29th of June 2020, it is estimated that a population of 13.16 lakhs people have been affected.

Added to the heavy rains are the vulnerabilities exacerbated by COVID-19 and more localised emergencies –including some districts that were affected by Cyclone Amphan, the oil well fire in Tinsukia district and hailstorms over the past few weeks, together have created a complex crisis for the people living in the areas affected.

Assessing damaged houses of affected community for repair

We are responding

The Government of Assam has set up 273 relief camps with 27,452people staying in these shelters. Dry rations, provisions for safe drinking water and shelter materials are being provided but the quantities have differed according to districts. In the current situation with the spread of COVID-19, people are finding it difficult to access the usual institutions providing relief camps or are themselves hesitant to stay there. They are also finding it challenging to access the relief usually expected during such crisis and facilities other than food are becoming more difficult to access as the attention of the government agencies is diverted to addressing issues related to the pandemic.
