Winter Campaign to support Vulnerable Communities adversely impacted by extreme cold temperatures

Winters is a harsh reality for many!

As the cold wave sweeps across several states of North India, thousands of people face life-threatening conditions. Extreme cold weather impacts the most vulnerable — those who have no shelter, those living in informal settlements, and the countless migrant workers and daily wage earners struggling to survive. These are the people who need your support the most.

ActionAid Association’s Winter Campaign is focused on providing urgent support to those who are the hardest hit by the cold wave in North India. This includes:

  • Homeless individuals without a place to stay.
  • Migrant construction workers who are exposed to harsh conditions in temporary camps.
  • Street vendors and daily wage workers who work outdoors in freezing temperatures to make ends meet.
  • Informal settlement residents, often living in makeshift shelters with no protection from the cold.

The cold wave is not just a seasonal challenge—it’s a matter of survival. This year, we are determined to reach people in need across the Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and Gujarat.

What We Do

In the event of such extreme cold temperatures, ActionAid follows a two-pronged response approach. On one hand, while ActionAid reaches out to the most vulnerable communities to provide immediate relief through provisions like warm clothes, blankets and dignity kits for women and girls, on the other hand, ActionAid teams and its community volunteers also engage with local authorities and other social organizations to help improve the overall living conditions of those who are adversely affected by extreme winters. This includes creating provisions for other facilities for eg heating, provisions for hot water, mobilizing support from the health department for people needing medical intervention etc.

With this two-pronged approach, your generous donations will help ActionAid respond and support the poor affected families with the following:

1. For the immediate term, help provide relief to those who need it the most:

  • Warm Clothing: Providing blankets, Sweater, shawls, muffler, socks, woollen caps, scarves and other warm essentials.
  • Emergency Ration and Supplies: Distributing Flour, Rice, Oil, Pulses, Tea, Spices essential supplies to vulnerable groups.
  • Providing dignity kits for Girls and women: Sanitary Napkins and underwear
  • Temporary Shelters: Homeless shelter kits - Tent, Bedroll, and Sleeping bag

2. Help create better living conditions for the vulnerable for a longer term

  • Engagement with local government to help improve services and quality of facilities in shelter homes, build more shelters for migrant workers etc
  • Engagement with other social organisations to mobilise support for other provisions like heating, health and medical services etc
  • Engagement with the community to create awareness on protection from extreme weather conditions.
  • Provide counselling support to elderly, and others where needed.
