Climate Change is threatening all life on Earth. Excessive use of fossil fuels for more than 250 years has impacted all the places where life exists - from the deepest oceans to the highest mountains. Today, we are witnessing the increased intensity and frequency of extreme climate-related events. Climate change is causing more and stronger heatwaves, forest fires, storms, heavy rain, floods and hurricanes. Droughts, heatwaves and floods hurt agriculture and damage the environment. Oceans are warming and rising, threatening coastal areas and sea life.
But beyond the science, we should remember that Climate Change is happening because of problems of power, equity and justice. Concern for Climate Justice is crucial as it addresses both historical and present socio-economic disparities. Action for Climate Justice will ensure that marginalised communities do not unfairly bear the burden of environmental damage. Action for Climate Justice will create a sustainable future where all beings thrive harmoniously with nature.
In India, people most impacted by Climate Change are those who depend on natural resources and nature's processes, including agriculturalists, pastoralists, fisherfolk, hunters and foragers. Informal workers are also disproportionately impacted, especially those working out of doors, as heatwave conditions will make their occupation life-threatening. These classes are already socially and economically marginalised as they are overwhelmingly from Dalit and tribal communities. Children are especially vulnerable to climate change, facing disrupted education, displacement, disease, and long-term stress.
Climate action requires concerted efforts by individuals, organisations, corporate bodies, governments, and international bodies to address and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Action for Climate Justice is critical for safeguarding the planet's ecosystems, protecting human health, ensuring food and water security, and maintaining economic stability. As part of the Action for Climate Justice, ActionAid Association (AAA) works on grounded action with communities, their leaders and organisations to help them build resilience to face the impact of climate change. AAA promotes climate-resilient livelihoods, strengthens community infrastructure, and provides humanitarian relief and rehabilitation during droughts, floods, cyclones, landslides, heatwaves, and cloudbursts.
ActionAid Association conducts community-based action research on the impact of Climate Change to build knowledge on the subject for the communities, policymakers, and the administration. AAA raises awareness through grassroots campaigns and workshops, ensuring community voices are heard and their needs are addressed.
