Wayanad, a hilly district in Kerala, has been severely affected by heavy monsoon rains, resulting in massive landslides on the morning of July 30, 2024. Areas such as Mundakai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Vellarmala have experienced significant destruction, including the complete washout of the LP School in Mundakkai and the Vellarmala Higher Secondary School. The districts have received 300 mm of rainfall in the last night of 29th July exacerbating the situation.
The disaster has resulted so far 4th August 2024 total 354 bodies including 49 children have been recovered, including children and women. Several villages in Meppadi Panchayat have been completely destroyed. Many people, houses, and livelihoods have been washed away in the landslides. The death toll and damage are expected to rise further. Above 200 are still missing. More than 200 people are undergoing treatment in various hospitals. There are around 10000 people in 93 relief camps in the district. The landslide has primarily affected ordinary working-class families.
With decades of experience in disaster response, ActionAid Association is actively engaged in delivering relief efforts. We are providing dry rations, sanitary kits, clothing, and support for rehabilitation and livelihoods. All our activities are coordinated with the district administration, the Inter Agency Group (IAG), and local organizations.
Our relief and recovery project focuses on immediate assistance, infrastructure rebuilding, and community resilience. Vulnerable groups, including plantation workers, women, children, the elderly, disabled, and minorities, are particularly affected and need urgent help.
A rapid needs assessment has been carried out by the ActionAid Office in Chennai, and planning is underway to provide essential items such as rice, food kits, bed sheets, blankets, bathing soap, and sanitary napkins to the affected families. Immediate distribution is needed to meet the urgent needs of 3,000 individuals. ActionAid Tamil Nadu remains committed to supporting the communities through this challenging time, working closely with the government and local organizations to ensure effective aid delivery.
