ActionAid India welcomes the Supreme Court verdict on triple talaq

Date : 22-Jun-2018

New Delhi, August 22, 2017: ActionAid India welcomes the Supreme Court’s verdict today on triple talaq, banning the practice that allows Muslim men to divorce their wives by uttering the word “talaq” thrice.

In a 3-2 verdict, the five-judge bench of the apex court termed triple talaq “unconstitutional and retrograde” saying the practice is against Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to equality.

“We welcome the observations and verdict of the Supreme Court. Triple talaq is patriarchal in nature and the practice has caused great injustice to Muslim women,” said Sandeep Chachra, Executive Director, ActionAid India.

“This is a historic judgment and we look forward to more such victories for greater gender justice for all communities and for all women across the world. We congratulate all the women who brought this matter to the Supreme Court and to justice.”

ActionAid India is proud to part of this struggle together with Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan, one of the petitioners in this case, and others.
