Solidarity Statement for Colombia

ActionAid Association stands in solidarity with the people of Colombia following the devastating earthquake of 10 August 2026, which has caused tragic loss of life, injuries, displacement and extensive damage to homes, public infrastructure and essential services across affected areas. We extend our deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones, and our thoughts are with all those who have been injured, displaced or separated from their families and communities.

As we serve and bring relief to communities affected by floods in Assam and Odisha, our solidarity and thoughts remain firmly with the people of Colombia, their families and all those responding to the earthquake emergency.

We salute the community members, local leaders, volunteers, caregivers, health workers, rescue personnel, civil-society organisations and public authorities who are working under extremely challenging conditions to save lives, provide urgent assistance and support affected families. Their efforts demonstrate the central role of local communities and first responders in humanitarian action.

Disasters often deepen inequalities and place a disproportionate burden on people living in poverty, women and girls, tribal and marginalised communities, informal workers, persons with disabilities and those with limited access to resources and public services. Humanitarian Action must therefore be grounded in dignity, equality, participation and the leadership of affected communities.

ActionAid Association reaffirms the need to ensure community-led humanitarian response and disaster preparedness. Across India, we are running Humanitarian Action Schools for first responders to strengthen the capacities of communities to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters. These efforts are rooted in the belief that communities are not merely recipients of aid; they are first responders, rights holders and leaders of their own recovery.
