Climate-related emergencies are becoming more frequent and severe across India, leaving thousands of vulnerable families struggling to rebuild their lives. Floods, landslides, cyclones, heat waves, droughts, and other extreme weather events continue to affect communities disrupting livelihoods, damaging homes, and increasing food and water insecurity.
India continues to face such natural disasters multiple times in a year, resulting in thousands of deaths, widespread destruction of homes, loss of crops, and large-scale displacement. Heat waves have also become one of the country's most persistent climate threats, with prolonged periods of extreme temperatures affecting many states.
When disasters strike, it is always the most vulnerable who suffer first and suffer most. Daily wage workers, farmers, migrant workers, older persons, children, and families living in informal settlements are among the hardest hit, as they often have limited access to safe shelter, clean water, healthcare, and other essential services.
Families living in poverty, in fragile homes, and in far-off areas are often left with little protection. Women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities face the greatest risks and often wait the longest for help to arrive.
These recurring emergencies are creating an uncertain future for the most vulnerable communities, making timely preparedness, relief, and long-term recovery more important than ever.
