National consultation on stopping child labour

On June 12, on the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour, the British High Commission and ActionAid Association organized a national consultation on child labour in New Delhi. The objective of this consultation was to discuss the various issues related to child labour, the progress made after the enactment of Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2016 (CLPRAA) and the scope for improvement. Nearly 80 people participated in this consultation.

Swami Agnivesh, Founder, Bonded Labour Liberation Front, Sutapa Sanyal, Former Director General, Uttar Pradesh Police, Joseph Victor Raj, National Convener, Campaign Against Child Labour (CACL), Ambarish Rai, National Convener, Right to Education Forum and several other child rights experts and activists addressed the meeting. Rich discussions took place on issues such as the definition and enumeration of child labour; laws and policies pertaining to child rights and labour; issues of migration and trafficking; and the role of police and other stakeholders in the prohibition of child labour.

One of the outcomes of the meeting was a set of policy recommendations that was collectively developed towards addressing the various issues pertaining to child labour. To read more, click here.
