This Season of Giving, Gift Hope to a Child in Need

The festive season in India is gradually reviving the spirit of celebration among people across the country. Though the year 2020 will witness a largely “indoor” festivity, hope can be spread widely. Celebration starts with children. Their laughter heals hearts, especially during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. How to celebrate the season of giving and caring in times of COVID-19. This is a good time to think about those who are less fortunate. People who harvest food for others, and themselves live in hunger. People who keep the cities clean and beautiful, and themselves live in need and squalor. For too many people, too much of their waking day, night is spent in earning for food and survival alone. Educating their children is compelled to be their least priority.

Share the Joy of Festivity by Gifting Hope

Gift hope of a new beginning to a child in need. There are many simple ways to help children in need. Rani, a 10-year-old girl shares: “I am lucky that I could continue my studies. I want to become a teacher. I was anxious about my schooling, when my teachers told me that the school would not open till the corona virus was under control. I was also worried that my parents would stop my education. Our family was facing financial hardships as both my parents were without jobs. All the places where they could find some work were shut down. I wondered how I would study if most government schools are not functioning. Some of my cousins and children in my neighbourhood are attending online classes. I do not have Internet connectivity or a mobile. My parents cannot afford to arrange a private tutor. Thank you, ActionAid and CARD (stands for Centre for All Round Development, based in Samastipur, Bihar and an ally of ActionAid Association) for helping us in right time. I am very happy that a teacher visits our village to teach us. Now we learn new things. We have learnt to maintain ourselves clean and social distancing to defeat corona virus.”

Many children like Rani, are unable to attend online classes and need our support to continue their studies. As per The SDG National Indicator Framework Report, nearly 46% of Indian population does not have Internet connection. Most of them are from the marginalized communities and from the rural poor. Schools have closed not only education to children of these communities, but also the nutritious noon meal. 11.59 crores of children are enrolled in the mid-day-meal scheme to receive much needed nutrition. But the COVID-19 pandemic and school closures, pose a huge threat to access this free meal, which is the only proper meal for millions of children.
