The unprecedented rains in 2018 caused massive floods and landslides across Kerala, resulting in extensive destruction. 14 districts in Kerala and one district in Karnataka were severely affected, Widespread destruction across 14 districts in Kerala and 1 district in Karnataka. Homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods were significantly damaged. Many families were left without basic necessities such as food, clean water, and shelter.
ActionAid’s Response:ActionAid, in collaboration with various support agencies and utilizing its own resources, initiated relief efforts in the worst-affected districts of Idukki, Wayanad, Alappuzha, and Pathnamthitta.Relief support provided to 2,547 households, benefiting approximately 12,000 individuals.Reached remote locations in collaboration with local organizations like the National Fish Workers Forum, Ekta Parishad, and Thudi – Tribal Centre.Distribution of dry ration, Non-Food Items (NFIs) including mattresses and cots, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) materials such as water purifiers and dignity kits.Education materials and clothes were also provided to affected families.Repair work carried out on 55 houses.Minor repairs of 10 Anganwadi (ICDS) centres in Pandhalam Municipality.Further repairs for 30 houses in Pandanadu Panchayat (Wards 1, 2, 3 & 4) of Chengannur Block, Alappuzha district.Additional 25 houses in Pandhalam village, Pandhalam Municipality Panchayat of Pathnamthitta district.Distribution of 10 water purifiers, each benefiting 5 families (total 50 families). Each purifier has a capacity of 25 litres per day.Installation of 4 water tanks: one in a school benefiting 150 children, and three in different locations reaching approximately 60 families.
