Basic Information About The InitiativeAntaranga programme was initiated in Kandhamal district in the aftermath of communal and ethnic violence in 2008. This programme aims at mobilizing youths for the purpose of building peace, communal harmony and also to channelize their energies in the process of nation development. This programme aims to provide a platform for coordinating various efforts of government, civil society organizations and individuals who were and are involved in process of not only bringing in harmony but also sustainable, equitable and rights based development to every village in the district. In last two and half years, a number of activities have been taken up under the programme. It is in this backdrop that the work by civil society groups began in Kandhamal. Victims of the violence went into relief camps and many agencies initiated work in the district to provide support in the camps, as well as work for long-term peace and take up issues of justice. It was as a part of this, that the first event by Antaranga (a collective of 13 NGOs and individuals) in the form of training 400 youths began. These youths came from far off blocks of the district and were people who had seen the conflict and been directly or indirectly a part of it. The next challenge thrown in front of civil society organizations committed to secularism on 25th December, 2008. That saw the formal birth of Antaranga - Intimate. Conscientization training cum festival was organized on the 22nd and 23rd of December, 2008 which saw the participation of 2500 youths in Phulbani. Antaranga (intimate) was conceived in the belief that together we could change, we could make a difference. Antaranga believed that the youth had it within them to weave the colors of diversity into a unity.
