    • Basic Information about the initiative
    • JAGRUTI was started in 1998 in Mangenkoppa, Belgaum District of Karnataka and since then we have been working with women and disabled people in Khanapur taluk of Belgaum district. Started as women`s self help groups, now Jagruta Mahila Okkoota, soon spread as cluster of women`s sanghas in each village and a federation of cluster Sanghas in around 40 villages in Khanapur taluk. While self help groups dealt with economic development of the families through women, federation started responding to problems in the community. Jagruta Mahila Okkuta soon started taking up issues of violence against women, cases of selling girl children and democratization of Panchayat. Jagruti has been associated with actionaid since 2009 on issues of right to food and employment. Gram Panchayat elections were held during May 2015, community members decided to participate in the local governance. As larger state level network, 265 among 650 community members won the Gram Panchayat elections and in the working area 9 women among 30 won the election.
